How To Find Your Creative Genius:
A Guide For Those Who Think They’re Not Creative

See also: Creative Thinking

Every person is creative when they are born. That’s a fact.

Unfortunately, with age, our creativity level tends to diminish. Why? Well, because when we grow up, most of us become conformists and so, start following (often blindly) various rules and regulations. That destroys creativity. Don’t worry, though! There’s good news for you: creativity is not a talent that only nonconformists have.

Creativity is a skill, which every one of us has. We simply either use it or not. Thus, even if you think you’re not creative, you can still find your creative genius and improve it.

However, before I tell you how you can rediscover your creativity, let’s figure out why you should do it in the first place. Why is being creative important in today’s world? And why should you spend your free time trying to improve your creativity? Will it pay off? Keep reading to find out.

Here’s Why You Should Improve Your Creativity

There are three main reasons why you should work on your creativity:

  • Creativity helps you solve problems and make decisions.

People who practise creativity every day can quickly come up with unique and innovative ideas. What’s more, their thinking abilities aren’t limited by logic, beliefs, or emotions. Thus, they can think deeply about a given issue or a situation and look at it from various perspectives and angles. Next, they can find the best way to solve it. Such a skill can be beneficial to you both at home as well as at work.

  • Creativity prolongs your life.

Did you know that the more creative you are throughout your life, the longer you will live? A study conducted in 2012 reveals that older men with high levels of creativity have a better chance of living longer. Why? Well, because creativity helps people (of any age) better adapt to life circumstances and can also help slow cognitive aging. Thus, it extends your lifespan.

  • Creativity boosts your self-confidence.

A creative person isn’t scared of taking risks. A creative person is eager to step out of their comfort zone and try new things. Thus, it’s much easier for creative people to acquire new knowledge as well as learn from their experiences and mistakes, and so achieve something in life. Moreover, a creative person doesn’t get easily depressed or discouraged by failure. A creative person understands that failure is a necessary part of success. It motivates them to work harder. All that together makes a creative person a self-confident individual who believes in him or herself.

Here’s How You Can Rediscover Your Creativity and Improve It

Since now you know that creativity is a skill worth having and practising as often as possible, let’s learn what you can do to find your creative genius. After all, being creative isn’t easy for everyone. In fact, for some of us, it can be complicated, or even seem impossible to do.

Today I will show you that, regardless of your creativity level, you can rediscover your creativity and master it. All you need is an open mind and willingness to take the first step. Nothing more. Nothing less. Shall we start?

Change your routine.

One of the best ways to awaken your creativity is to do a usual thing in an unusual way, or change it completely. Does it sound complicated? If yes, don’t get discouraged. In reality, it’s not as hard as it seems.

Take your time to think about your day and find things you always do in the same way. It can be the way you prepare your breakfast, the way you do your hair, or what you do every time after dinner on the weekend, for example, sit in front of TV for hours or check your social media profiles. Now, pick one of those things and change it. Thus, add more variety to your everyday life.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Instead of drinking a glass of black or green tea every morning, try adding new flavors, such as cinnamon or chocolate. You can also experiment and start drinking only water for a week or try smoothies. You can do the same with dishes, that is, add different seasoning or ingredients to your dishes. Experiment.

  • Go to work by a different means of transportation or take a different route. This will exercise your brain and, who knows, maybe new opportunities, love, or an adventure is hiding right behind the corner?

  • Redecorate your home, room, or workspace. It will change the way you feel about yourself and give you satisfaction. So, reorganize your home office, kitchen, or living room: it might boost your mood and give you inspiration.

Do something creative.

Another way to find your creative genius is to, simply, do something, which is considered creative every day. But what actually falls under that category? Well, everything that allows you to create something new. Thus, painting, cooking, playing an instrument, writing, crafting, are all considered creative activities.

Now, if all the above activities sound too difficult for you to do, don’t push yourself too hard. Instead, take small steps. Remember, it’s not easy to suddenly become creative. Sometimes the process involves a lot of imitation and it’s okay. Remember, by imitating others you can get inspired easier, learn new things, and find out that you can create something. It’ll boost your confidence and encourage you to experiment.

Here are several things you can do, which will help you get creative:

  • If you find painting overwhelming, try coloring. There are many anti-stress coloring books for adults available on the market, which can not only inspire creativity, but also, help you overcome anxiety, help you unplug from technology, and remove your negative thoughts.

  • If crafting is too complicated for you, follow do-it-yourself (DIY) tutorials. Thus, instead of checking your social media profiles, search for various interesting tutorials on YouTube and Instagram. Learn how to design your own clothes, cook new dishes, or create useful household items. Then, use the tips in practice and surprise yourself as well as everyone around.

  • If creative writing isn’t something you feel comfortable to try now, begin with something much easier such as journaling. As Bryan Hutchinson says, journaling has the power to change your life and reveal your “inner awesomeness.” So, give it a try!

Change your mindset and attitude

Who said that you can’t do something? Have you tried it? If no, then how can you know that you can’t do it? If yes, is one failure enough to admit defeat? No, it isn’t!

Think about Edison. Although he failed 10,000 times to create a light bulb, he didn’t give up. He was learning from his mistakes and kept on trying until, eventually, it paid off. The same goes for a number of writers, company owners, and other successful people. They don’t give up, and so shouldn’t you. Remember, by trying, you don’t lose anything and can gain a lot. By not trying, on the other hand, you can be sure you won’t ever be successful. So, change “I can’t” into “I can” and see how your creativity improves.

The same goes with saying “No” to every opportunity. Think about your recent decisions. Was there an invitation you turned down without a good reason? Did you have the chance to go somewhere, but chose to sit at home instead? And, how often do your children beg you to play with them or go to the Zoo and you never seem to have time for that? Well, now it’s time to change. Start saying “Yes” more often than “No” and embrace every opportunity. See what happens.

Remember, by adopting a positive mindset and being more open to life opportunities, you exercise your brain and give yourself a chance to improve your creativity, mood, and achieve something in life.
