How to Find Remote Work Experience Opportunities
See also: Working From HomeRemote work experience can be a great opportunity for several reasons. First, you can work from home or any other preferred location, such as your favourite coffee shop. Second, it looks great on your CV. Third, the world of work is changing and you might find that you have other opportunities during your career to work remotely, so doing so will give you the skills you need to succeed.
But finding remote work experience opportunities can feel a little harder than looking for traditional roles. This is because although it is a popular working style right now, there tends to be fewer of these opportunities advertised.
That said, more and more companies are making way for this type of work (and work experience), especially given the current circumstances with the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. To help you out, this guide looks at how you can find exciting remote working opportunities which will help to boost your career.
Create a CV aimed at remote roles
The first step towards landing some remote work experience is to create a strong CV. This will help you when you begin applying to remote positions or reaching out to relevant companies. In your CV you need to outline your skills, particularly the transferable skills you possess that are important for a remote position. For example, if you are going to be working remotely it’s important that you are self-motivated, organised and able to communicate effectively.
Not only this, but you need to write a short and snappy personal statement that explains who you are and why you're looking for a remote role. Be sure to keep your CV to a maximum of two A4 pages (one is even better) and effectively showcase your skills, any previous work experience you have, and your educational history.
Use job boards
Online job boards such as Abodoo, can be a great way to find work experience or internships. Though this is a generic job board, it still advertises some remote positions, just check to see if this is specified in the job advert and use the keyword ‘remote’ when running searches.
That said, you can also find job boards that are specifically dedicated to remote roles and these can give you an even better chance of finding the ideal work experience position for you. Some of these sites include:
- Remote.co
- FlexJobs
- Remoters
- No Desk
Approach companies directly
If there are any big brands or even local companies that you're interested in working for, sometimes it pays to just approach them directly and ask about work experience. You can call them, send them an email with your CV, or even drop in and see someone in person if they're close by.
Though they might not be advertising remote (or even office-based) positions at that time, they might be open to creating a work experience position for you, even if it’s just for a few weeks. There is never any harm in asking, so always enquire about any possible opportunities and, even if they aren't able to take you on right now, they might keep you in mind for future positions or work experience.
Make the most of your connections
You might not think you have many connections or a particularly big network, but you’d be surprised! And tapping into this network when you're looking for work experience can be very useful. Professional networking sites like LinkedIn are great for finding work opportunities so if you’ve begun using this platform to build an online network, be sure to use it! Post an update letting everyone know that you're looking for work and use the job search options to see what you can find.
You can also use your offline network to find work experience. If you have an idea of the type of remote work experience you’d like to do, ask around your friends and family to see if their company or anyone they know might be able to help. Even a friend of a friend can be extremely useful in landing an exciting remote work placement - and you won’t know if you don't ask!
Use your social media platforms
Over the last decade, social media has become a huge networking tool with most people having at least one online account. There are so many great ways you can use social media, and one of these is to help you find some work experience. In the first instance, you could put out a post to your friends and connections letting them know you're looking for some remote work experience. You never know who might see it and be able to help.
You can also make the most of dedicated groups and hashtags to help you search for opportunities. For example, there are a number of Facebook groups set up to allow people to share job vacancies and even some that are specifically used to discuss remote work and any opportunities that arise. Although less popular, you can also find some of these groups on Twitter too.
Hashtags allow you to run searches yourself, as well as letting others know that you're available for hire. Some of the most popular hashtags you should use whilst searching and whilst sharing posts about your availability are:
#JobSearch
#JobSearching
#HireMe
#RemoteWorking
#WorkExperience
#Internship
#RemoteWorkExperience
These aren't the only hashtags you can use, and you’ll probably find you recognise trends as you're searching, but these can be a good place to start. By searching for these on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. you might also find pages and groups you can join where people share vacancies and help each other out with tips and advice.
